744/844 Series Elemental Analyzers
L'introduction
LECO carbon and sulfur by induction analyzers deliver fast, accurate carbon and sulfur determination in inorganic materials using high‑frequency induction furnace combustion and nondispersive infrared detection. Designed for routine quality and process control, the CS744 combines robust performance, ease of operation, and dependable accuracy to support day-to-day analysis across metals, minerals, and other industrial materials.
Building on this proven platform, the LECO CS844 Series expands capability and performance for more demanding applications. In addition to the core features of the CS744, the CS844 incorporates a heated dust filter to minimize sulfur loss and enhance low‑level sulfur detection, delivering improved precision at trace concentrations. With higher throughput options, advanced automation, and greater workflow flexibility, the CS844 Series is optimized for high-volume laboratories that require extended detection ranges, reduced maintenance, and consistent, reliable results—especially for low‑sulfur materials.

How Carbon & Sulfur Analyzers Work
LECO CS744 and CS844 analyzers determine carbon and sulfur content by fully combusting a small, precisely weighed sample and measuring the gases released during that process. Both instruments use a high‑temperature induction furnace and advanced infrared detection to ensure accurate, repeatable results across a wide range of materials.
A typical analysis begins by placing one gram of material into the furnace, where radio‑frequency induction rapidly heats the sample in a stream of purified oxygen. This controlled combustion converts the carbon and sulfur in the sample into carbon dioxide (CO₂) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂). The oxygen flow then carries these gases through a series of conditioning stages that remove moisture and particulates, enabling the detectors to receive a clean, stable gas stream.
The cleaned gases flow into infrared detection cells, where their concentrations are determined by the strength of their infrared absorption at specific wavelengths. Because CO₂ and SO₂ each absorb infrared energy differently, the analyzers can measure both elements independently with high precision. In the CS844, two different optical path lengths are available, allowing the system to automatically select the most appropriate range for either low‑level or high‑level samples without sacrificing accuracy.
To maintain stable measurement conditions, the analyzers regulate internal pressure and continuously monitor gas flow. Before each sample runs, they also perform a quick reference check using a pure carrier gas, ensuring the system remains calibrated. By comparing each measurement to known calibration standards, the instruments deliver consistent carbon and sulfur results suitable for everything from routine quality control to more demanding research applications.
